Trending Now: Sweatsuits and All Things Cozy

We here at Brooklyn Cloth are dedicating this blog to the Space Age in the 1960s, and the rise of disco music, kung-fu movies, jogging, and mountain climbing in the 1970s. Yes, you read that right. If it wasn’t for these major events occurring and the popularity of these activities rising then we might not have been introduced to our beloved tracksuits, or as we now refer to them: sweatsuits.

 

How Did Sweatsuits Become A Thing?

When the tracksuit was first introduced to society in the ‘60s and ‘70s, it began as a garment that was only worn while performing physical activities. The tracksuit became more normalized and socially accepted in settings outside of athletics as time passed. All we can say to that is thank goodness! Imagine life without comfy hoodies and joggers. Makes you shudder, right?

                                  

During the rise of hip hop in the ‘70s, Adidas introduced their 3 stripe “street style” tracksuit to society while collaborating with German soccer star, Franz Anton Beckenbauer. In the 2000s, Britney Spears also debuted sweatsuits in a non-athletic way by gifting her wedding party with the iconic Juicy Couture velour sets as favors.

 

As time progressed, society began wearing sweatsets as fashion statements. I’m not sure about you, but we vividly remember walking down the hallways in middle school as everybody passed by in their baby pink matching Juicy sets paired with their ginormous totes. 

 

The Evolution of Sweatsuits

The Adidas and Juicy Couture sets that caught everyone's attention and started this on-going trend were, for the most part, fitted to the body, making them socially acceptable to wear out in public. As more companies began to produce tracksuits, many variations were invented.

 

Eventually, the loose-fitting sweatsuit debuted along with the connotation that leisure wear was “sloppy” and “lazy” looking. Many believed that tracksuits should be worn solely while exercising or lounging in the comfort of your own home. 

 

Sweatsuits and Stay at Home Orders

 

In the last five-ish years, sweatpants have transformed into fitted joggers with cuffed ankles. Before quarantine, models, celebrities, influencers, and ordinary people alike were seen walking the streets in both oversized sweatshirts and joggers, but now that the world is half shutdown, sweat set popularity has skyrocketed. 

 

Our new “normal” lifestyle of living in quarantine has helped this trend grow even further than it already has. With nowhere to go, many individuals have been posting photographs on social media at home wearing these types of outfits daily. Whether pairing oversized sweatshirts with a pair of biker shorts or tie-dying old sweatshirts and sweatpants to create matching sets, this trend has once again taken off and we here at Brooklyn Cloth are loving it.

 

Say goodbye to sweat sets being seen as sloppy! Not only are sweatsuits being worn with white sneakers or fuzzy slippers when going for a more casual look, but it has become quite normal to see these sweatsuits paired with laced up combat boots or even, believe it or not, high heels and loafers.

 

Since there has not been a reason to get dressed up into a fancy outfit yet alone change into even a pair of jeans during the past year now, sweatsuits are defiantly coming in handy. With comfort though, might come the feeling of sluggishness after a while of not getting dressed up. Of course, we have grown tired of feeling this way but not quite enough to get dressed in jeans again, so we found a happy medium.
