Everything You Need To Know About Upcycled Fabric

With Earth Day just around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time to talk about a hot topic - sustainability. In recent years, the fashion industry has been one of the top industries put under scrutiny for the amount of waste being burnt or put into landfills.

Brooklyn Cloth is a fashion company, right? So why would we want to talk about this? Here at Brooklyn Cloth, we have been trying to do our part in sustainability by using upcycling.

What is Upcycling?

Burning fabric releases harsh chemicals into the environment. Throwing away unwanted clothing creates pileups in our landfills, which take a long time to decompose, if they ever do. In response, brands have started to use upcycling to try and reduce the amount of waste they produce.

Upcycling is the process of taking used items and refashioning them into wearable products with better quality. This process can be accomplished with both new and used fabrics. It can even be done to the yarns that your clothes are made of. Tedious? Yes, but worth it to reduce waste!

How is this different from recycling? We’re glad you asked! Recycling is when you take the waste and change it into something that can be reused. Upcycling simply takes unwanted materials to create products that have better quality than your typical clothing or the original product it came from.

Where Did Upcycling Come From?

The fanfare with upcycling rather than throwing away materials started with small labels finding ways to combat the waste that the fashion industry is known so well for. Using upcycled materials is a way for us to produce clothing sustainably, but we can also manipulate the designs to create items we all love to wear.

At Brooklyn Cloth, our clothing is produced by taking recycled yarn and converting it into new fabric that we then use to make our products.  We source sustainable materials like recycled polyester and we are conscious about our cutting process to lower the waste of fabric as much as possible. When producing products, there will always be scraps of fabric leftover, but we donate the fabric to be reused or recycled for other purposes.
