Short sleeve rayon tops are so versatile you can pair them with pretty much anything. They’re perfect for all occasions, whether you’re going on vacation to a nice tropical resort to having a night out with friends.

History of Rayon

Before going into styling your short sleeve rayon top, there are a couple of things that you should know about the fabric rayon. It is said that Rayon was invented in 1846, by Christian Friedrich Schönbein accidentally when he “treated cellulose with a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids and produced a cellulose derivative that he called guncotton.” Sixty-five years later, it began to be manufactured in the United States. Until 1924, rayon was known as artificial silk, as the fabric was a less expensive alternative to silk clothing and accessories.

What is rayon?

Rayon is defined as a manufactured fiber composed of regenerated cellulose. It is made of semi-synthetic fibers, usually composed of purified cellulose fibers such as wood pulp.

How many types of rayon are there? Well, there are three types that are most commonly used:

Viscose rayon

Modal fabric

  1. Viscose rayon is a semi-synthetic type of rayon fabric made from wood pulp that is used as a silk substitute, as it has a similar drape and smooth feel to the luxury material.

  1. Modal fabric is a semi-synthetic fabric made from beech tree pulp that is used primarily for clothing, such as underwear, pajamas, and household items such as bed sheets and towels. Fun Fact!! It is more expensive than cotton and viscose, which is considered luxurious textile.

  1. Lyocell is similar to modal in that it is made from the same material, beech trees. However, the way it is produced is much more sustainable. The production uses fewer harsh chemicals. Lyocell is the most absorbent type of rayon, it absorbs moisture from the skin and still has you feeling dry and cool.

Why should you wear rayon?

Are you tired of feeling sticky and sweaty during high temperatures? Well, rayon is the perfect fabric for you, it is lightweight and breathable, and moisture-absorbent. Rayon is more absorbent than cotton, which makes it the perfect fabric for activewear and humid climates since it absorbs moisture from the skin.

Feel the breeze as you walk through the beach with your favorite cold drink. Rayon will keep you cool even during the hottest days.
